Lighting Bengaluru’s Green Oasis: Kempegowda Airport’s T2 by Ideaaz
Touted as one of the world’s most beautiful airports, Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport’s T2 terminal is a grand feat of design and engineering – offering passengers the experience of walking through a garden. Continue reading to discover how Ideaaz Automation applied Lutron’s lighting management system to support the airport’s visionary approach.
For this expansive, biophilic terminal, Ideaaz Automation executed an intelligent lighting solution that maximized daylight, minimized energy consumption, and enhanced passenger comfort. Using Lutron systems, both wired and wireless integrations, and adaptive light control, the project redefined scalable, sustainable illumination in a globally significant, high-performance infrastructure.
A Vision for Sustainable Infrastructure
The project envisioned the integration of sustainable technologies across the board. Some of the notable initiatives include:
- Implementing renewable electricity infrastructure
- Using green and locally sourced materials
- Creating the aesthetic of a ‘Terminal in a Garden’
- Adopting electric vehicles
- Generating on-site solar power
A Tribute to Bengaluru’s Green Identity
Inaugurated by Hon. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi in November 2022, Terminal 2 pays tribute to Bengaluru’s identity as a ‘Garden City’. Some of the terminal’s unique features include:
- Indoor gardens with native plants
- Bamboo-crafted pavilions
- Bamboo-latticed skylights that filter natural light
- Plants suspended from bells and veils, enriching the visual experience
- Maximum use of natural light during daytime hours

Intelligent Lighting That Complements Nature
To match the design vision, Ideaaz Automation deployed a smart, IoT-based lighting control system using advanced technologies like DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) and Lutron Quantum. These systems delivered precise light management at scale – improving energy efficiency and supporting the architectural intent.
Key Features of the Ideaaz Smart Lighting System:
Daylight Harvesting
Sensors adjust artificial lighting based on the availability of daylight—ensuring balance, comfort, and energy savings.
Occupancy-Based Sensors
Lighting responds to human activity, dimming or switching off in low-use areas like corridors, lounges, and restrooms.
DALI System Control
- On/off switching
- Smooth dimming
- Scene setting (e.g., night, security, maintenance)
- Time-based scheduled lighting
- Real-time diagnostics & monitoring
IoT-Based Control Access
Remote management via web/mobile platforms with integration to Building Management Systems (BMS) and HVAC, enabling centralized, unified control.
Outcomes That Matter
Terminal 2 is the world’s largest pre-certified Platinum LEED terminal by the U.S. Green Building Council. It is powered entirely by renewable energy and sets a new standard in sustainable aviation infrastructure.
Impact highlights:
- Reduced total energy consumption
- Supported Scope 1 & 2 net-zero carbon goals
- Extended lighting fixture lifespan
- Lowered operational costs
Passengers now enjoy a tranquil, energy-efficient travel experience-amidst lush green gardens and adaptive lighting. The Ideaaz Automation system plays a pivotal role in achieving this vision, cementing its place as a leader in smart lighting solutions for future-forward infrastructure.
